This bill, called the FAMILIES Act, will divert parents and caregivers from incarceration into a comprehensive program. The diversion program establishes collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies to offer programming, including education, employment services, pareking skills, mental health and subtance abuse services. Programs will also assist with access to healthcare, housing, and public benefits. The bill will provide $100 million in FY 2021 for the program on the federal level, and will provide $20 million to states through grants to replicate sentencing alternative programs. Individuals who successfully complete the program may be eligible to have charges dismissed or expunged.
