HB 1164 would establish a state competitive equipment assistance grant program, known as the apple a day program, through the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). The program is intended for public schools to improve the quality of meals that meet federal dietary guidelines and increase student consumption of whole foods and minimally processed foods. HB 1164 identifies the process OSPI must follow for the solicitation of project applicants, what the applicants have to be able to demonstrate, criteria for prioritization for funding, and data reporting requirements.
