HB 1240: Concerning suicide review teams

The legislature commends the state Suicide Prevention Plan Steering Committee’s comprehensive suicide prevention plan. This plan finds that about one-half of mental health conditions appear by age fourteen and identifies a need for preventing youth suicide risk farther upstream in a child’s life.

The act establishes a youth suicide review team to investigate the lives of all youth who die by suicide in order to create more targeted interventions. The act denotes how the review will take place and the composition of the team and requires that the team report findings and recommendations to the governor and members of the legislature by June 1, 2021.

Finally, it amends two RCW to allow for health information/data sharing to support activities of the Youth Suicide Review Team.
