Partners for Our Children

Sponsored by Representative Maxwell, HB 1283 changes the minimum age at which children are required to be enrolled in school from eight years of age to six years of age. However, students under the age of eight are not subject to the requirement that the school district file a petition with juvenile court if the child has seven or more unexcused absences in any month or any more than ten unexcused absences in a school year, nor must students under eight years of age be referred to the truancy board upon a fifth unexcused absence.

Substitute bill:  The substitute bill lowers the age for parents whose children receive home-based instruction to sign a declaration of intent to provide home-based instruction from age 8 and older to age 6 and older.
