HB 1648: Providing for suicide awareness and prevention programs to create safer homes and reduce suicide among service members, veterans, and their families

The Department of Licensing shall distribute to all firearms dealers in the state suicide awareness and prevention materials tailored to firearms owners that are developed by the Safer Homes, Suicide Aware Task Force. The dealer must post the materials and make them available to all firearms purchasers and transferees.

The commission will also make available to all licensed pharmacies and they must post them at points of sale.  Further, the commission will survey all the pharmacists about gaps between practice and suicide prevention and help in identifying barriers.  The commission can link survey distribution to pharmacist license renewal.  The commission with analyze data and complete a report, due to the Legislature on 11.15.2020.

They Department of Health shall develop and implement a statewide plan to reduce suicide among service members, veterans, and their families.  Further, the Safer Homes, Suicide Aware project is created within DOH so as to collect private funds for the project.

Finally, the School of Dentistry at UW shall also develop curriculum for students and licensed dentists about suicide assessment, treatment and management and is required to submit a progress report to the governor and relevant committees of the legislature by July 1, 2019.
