HB 1831: Revising resource limitations for public assistance

HB 1831 revises the definition of “resource” for purposes of eligibility requirements for an exemption of a resource in order to qualify for public assistance. The bill specifically changes the car asset limit to “if it is used for transportation for the individual or a member of the individual’s household” and changes the cash asset limit to not exceed the limit set by the department, consistent with limitations on resources and exemptions necessary for federal aid assistance. 

Amendment: Exempts a vehicle with an equity value of up to $10,000 from the definition of “resource” when determining eligibility for public assistance.

House Floor Amendment: The bill was amended on the House floor to exempt other assets up to $6000.  That put the asset limit at $10,000 for a car and $6000 for other.
