HB 2609: Concerning educator cultural competence

HB 2609 would mandate the development of plan for the creation and delivery of cultural competency training for school board directors and superintendents. The training would be mandated to include foundational elements of cultural competence, focusing on multicultural education and principles of English language acquisition, including information regarding best practices for implementing tribal history and culture curriculum. The bill would also amend current statute to professional development to support revised evaluations systems under RCW 28A.405.100 to include foundational elements of cultural competence.

The bill would also task key groups with the development of a content outline for professional development and training in cultural competence for school staff. This training should include components suitable for delivery by individuals from the local community or community-based organizations with appropriate expertise
