SB 5044: Relating to the GET ready for college program

This bill emphasizes the importance of early investment in young students and the potential for that investment to impact those students’ opportunities for college enrollment.  It establishes the GET ready for college program, which is intended to encourage families to begin saving for college. As such, the state of Washington will pay for both the $50 enrollment fee for each account and the one GET unit required to open the account for all children who are born in Washington State.  Students who move to Washington State and enroll in public school and whose parent(s) have lived in the state for at least one year will also be eligible. Children will receive additional GET units when they reach educational milestones, accruing a total of 200 units at the time of graduation from a Washington state public high school.
