SB 6365 requires the Department of Commerce to work with the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to administer a two-year pilot program that links homeless children and their families with stable housing located in the homeless student’s school district. Additionally, the entities should develop a competitive grant process to make a one-time grant award of $300,000 to a school district partnered with an eligible organization. 

Some examples of activities eligible for assistance under this pilot program include direct rental assistance, which includes security or utility deposits, first and last month’s rent assistance, rental application fees, eligible moving expenses to be determined by the department, utility assistance and gas assistance for families with vehicles, shelter and related services for the homeless and employment and educational support for the family so long as the assistance provided facilitates the family continuing to live in the school district.

The bill also states that this act is null and void if appropriations are not approved and the act expires January 15, 2017.
