Healthiest Next Generation

Governor: Funding is provided for the Department of Health (DOH) to partner with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Department of Early Learning on a comprehensive childhood obesity prevention project. This one-time appropriation will also fund a commission to complete a report with strategies for the Legislature.
House: Funding is provided to implement Second Substitute House Bill 2643 (healthiest next generation), which establishes a statewide childhood obesity prevention project. The Department of Health (DOH) will coordinate interagency efforts and report to the Legislature on strategies to prevent childhood obesity, and will pass through funding for obesity prevention coordinators at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and Department of Early Learning.

Final: Funding is provided for the Department of Health (DOH) to support Washington’s Healthiest Next Generation Initiative. The DOH will partner with OSPI, Department of Early Learning, and other public and private entities to increase physical activity and access to healthy foods and drinking water among children. The DOH will submit reports on the Initiative to the Governor and Legislature by December 31, 2014, and June 30, 2015.
